Bank Wood (Botany) Mill, a water powered cotton mill,  was built by Thomas Bottomley of Charlesworth in 1791 . He was not successful in business and assigned the mill to John Garlick. In 1801 it was assigned to William Wardlow and Thomas Higginbottom. In 1807 William Wardlow was the sole owner. Thomas Howard and George Wardlow became occupiers on the 28th December 1855. Later whilst in the occupation of William Waller and Brothers the mill was destroyed by fire with the damage amounting to £8,000 paid by the insurance.
